Time spent in the office was pretty sweet, too. On a daily basis, the cafe was stocked with snacks and drinks- fruit, veggies, hummus, granola bars, coffee, cappuccino, you name it. One time, the head of HR even popped into a meeting and presented us with a six-pack. Common spaces came equipped with large comfy couches, a ginormous TV, and many video and board games we could use at our leisure. I often walked in to find people battling it out via video game or an intense Jenga match. And the week before I left, almost half the office was gathered in the kitchen to watch the World Cup. The team worked hard, and we were often rewarded for our perseverance and dedication with in-office celebrations- Halloween parties, desk-decorating competitions, and company-wide happy hours. And the big shebang? A holiday party hosted at a swanky art museum, complete with unlimited food and ever-flowing drinks, reimbursed Uber rides and hotel rooms, and a photo booth with the most props Ive ever seen. Go big or go home, right? For the first few months, I was elated. Several times I found myself thinking Im going to be at this job for a really long time, and I felt excitement and security in that thought. But, two months after cheersing champagne glasses with my superiors at the swanky museum, I found myself crying in a bathroom on Valentines Day. And no, my boyfriend and I didnt break up. I was crying because I got a work email that made me feel like, well, crap. Sent to my entire team, it announced the promotion of two of my colleagues- one of whom held my saatkorn exact role and had been there for about the same length of time as me. This was despite recently being told those in my position would need at least four mora years of experience before advancing. It was a confusing mixed message to say the least, and I went from feeling my team had my back and best interests in mind to feeling lied to and skeptical.This email was, as they say, the icing on the top of the cake. Except this cake didnt taste very good. Though only a couple sentences long, it brought me to the realization that, though I was saving $15 a week on fruit, I was unhappy. Really, truly, Grumpy Cat unhappy. And that realization led to some serious soul-searching and trying to figure out how exactly I could be so miserable surrounded by so many perks. After all, it was just one email, one promotion. Well, it turns out all the video games in the world cant make up for the followingI Didnt See Any Value in What I Was DoingOther than ordering Panera for big meetings or mastering Outlooks sched uling assistant feature, I didnt see the point to my job. And though others expressed appreciation at times for what I did, I often felt disposable. Dont get me wrong- I completely understood that menial tasks went along with an entry-level job. Someone once told me Even the CEO has to take out the trash sometimes, and I strongly agree. But this was more than that. There were times I felt invisible, and I was increasingly convinced that no one would notice if I didnt show up for weeks at a time. I Needed a Different Kind of Work-Life BalanceYes, when I went on vacation, I was told I better not read or respond to any emails. And yes, even the COO went completely off the grid when he took time off. But when you werent on vacation, the respect for your non-work life kind of went out the window. I was getting emails at all times of day and night- and more often than not, expected to answer them ASAP. So, by the time my vacation rolled around, I really (really) needed it. While some peop le thrive in environments like this, I learned that Id rather have work-life balance every day, rather than a few concentrated weeks a year.I Wasnt Interested in What We Were DoingHeres the real kicker- at the end of the day, I just wasnt passionate about the line of work I was in. The company was (and still is) doing great things, and yet I still didnt really want to be a part of it. Even if there had been ample opportunity for growth, it wasnt in an area I wanted to continue pursuing. So after doing this for months and months, I found myself questioning if there was a point to even going into the office.Looking back on it now, I feel like I pulled the wool over my eyes when I accepted the offer. I let the glam of the fringe benefits mute the voices in my head saying You never wanted to work in this field before, You loathe your job responsibilities- admit it, and No, really, what are you doing? I let the free food and the fancy parties blind me to the fact that I was moving in the wrong direction. However, while Im glad I left this job, I dont regret taking the position because it taught me a valuable lesson about company culture and what I ultimately want. Sure, toward the end I was miserable, but the company showed me how well employees can be treated, and that they should be rewarded for their hard work. Basically, I had one part of the equation figured out- the type of culture I want to work in. But I was missing the other part- doing meaningful work Im excited about. So when I looked for my current job, I tried really hard to fulfill both sides of the equation- I looked for a position that had a healthy mix of work I find value in and enjoy doing (most of the time) and some awesome perks. Then one day, an employer or hiring manager tells you in a rejection email, “You are overqualified for this position”. And you wonder, “What does that really mean?” The more you think about being too good to do a job, the less it makes sense to you. You fit the job qualifications and requirements and now that is a bad thing? If this has happened to you before, we explain what the hiring manager or employer was really trying to say by labeling you “overqualified” and how to avoid it. They cannot understand why you want the job If the job does not seem to pay well, it seems like you will get bored too quickly, or the hiring manager did not like your answer to the interview question, “Why do you want to work here?” they may call you overqualified. To them, it makes no sense that you would take a job beneath your abilities that does not challenge you. They do not want to hire a person who will be bored and unmotivated because the work is too easy. Hiring managers and employers may even feel they are helping you by rejecting you. They feel this way because, in their eyes, the job is beneath you. They feel unworthy of your talent and abilities Imagine for a moment you are a business owner running a startup. Your experience is as small as your budget and you are learning as you go. Then, you post a job listing and an experienced Google engineer applies. What do you do? The processes behind hiring, training, bringing people up to speed and all of the administrative processes in between...all cost time and money. Companies do not want to go through the process if they predict you will likely to quit within a year. If they know your skills are relevant and that there is a risk you will be gone within a year, they may use the label “overqualified”. The risk is greater than the reward to them. This label can also be applied if they see you are a job hopper, and given every company would kill to have you, they may pass on you while using this label. They fear you are a litigious risk or culture fit Sadly, this is the result of operating in a country with Equal Employment Opportunity laws (EEOC) and less-than-respectable business owners. If a company fears you run the risk of one day filing a lawsuit for any form of discrimination, or you fall into a legally protected class of job candidate, they may call you overqualified. Meanwhile, the real intent behind the label is discrimination based on age, race, gender, and disability. Settling lawsuits is expensive and not all bosses are scrupulous. Bosses make mistakes, too. If they slip up and do something that leads to a lawsuit, it always reflects poorly on a company’s reputation. Companies may just not want to deal with all of it and use safe words to get out of hiring someone such as “not a good culture fit”. We were taught that pessimists see the glass as half-empty while optimists see it as half-full. I’ve always liked to challenge truisms? - ? metaphors like this oversimplify life. It makes us approach optimism and pessimism as opposite and fixed concepts you are forced to choose a side. Life is not static, but fluid. You can drink it down and then refill the glass.Our society worships optimists and stigmatizes pessimists people will like you or reject you depending on your view. However, this right or wrong approach is deceiving. Both optimism and pessimism have bright and dark sides what you do matters more than how you see the glass.Optimism rules the world“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”? - Oscar WildeOptimism wasn’t always the ruler. Historically, it was associated with simplistic and unrealistic people , especially in literature such as Porter’s “Pollyanna.” Psychologists, like Freud, dismissed it considering it ‘illusory denial.’Since the 1960s, there’s been a change in sentiment supported by growing research that correlates positivity to being successful. Positivity became king and we, inadvertently, became its servants.Many psychologists classify the population as predominantly optimistic some claiming 80% of people are optimistic, others stating that 60% of us are somewhat optimistic. This seems an optimistic appraisal to me. Some experts agree they believe that optimism itself may affect the validity of research on positivity.Research shows that optimism is correlated with increased life expectancy, better health, increased success in academia, work, and sports, and greater chances of recovery from adversity. However, many experts think most studies can’t discriminate cause from effect. Does thinking positively make us healthier? Or is it that being healthier le ad us to think positively?Optimism is a broad personality trait it makes us believe that good things will be plentiful in the future, and bad ones scarce. But, those who weren’t born on the right side, can they learn to be more optimistic?This simple question creates many discrepancies. Some researchers believe that yes, we can. Others think that interventions don’t make us more optimistic but instead just reduce our pessimism.The half-empty frame“Optimism is not simply the absence of pessimism, and well-being is not simply the absence of helplessness.” - Christopher PetersonAlison Ledgerwood doesn’t buy that most of us see the glass half-full she believes that our perception of the world tends to lean toward negative thoughts.Research by this social psychologist proposes a fixed approach to the glass dilemma. We either have a ‘gain’ or a ‘loss’ frame we see the upside or the downside in things. Even worse, our mind gets stuck in the negative more than in the posi tive.Ledgerwood and her colleague studied people’s reaction to a surgical procedure by testing both a bright and dark side approach. Participants who were told the surgery had a 70% success rate, reacted positively to the prospects of going through it. Conversely, those who were told the procedure had a failure rate of 30%, reacted negatively.To challenge the initial reaction, the first group was afterward presented with the 30% failure rate and the second one with the 70% success rate. Surprisingly, the ones who originally reacted positively now had a negative view and the others didn’t change theirs they continue to see the procedure as negative.This exercise proved not only that positivity can be affected by negative information but, also, that our mind can get stuck in an initial pessimistic view.But, can we switch from one frame to another?Another study presented people with the same challenge: 600 lives are at stake. Only that one group was asked to focus on the lives that could be saved and others on the ones that could be lost. Though both had to do the same simple math calculation (600 -100=?), the group that had to convert losses to gains took almost twice the time to get to the result than the other.We tend to tilt toward the negative, according to Ledgerwood. We need to work harder to recover from negative views to see the glass half-full requires an extra effort.So, who’s right? Are we mostly optimistic? Or do we lean towards negativity? Maybe both.The optimism bias“What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favorite day,” said Pooh.” ? A.A. MilneSeeing the glass-half-full has many benefits, but there’s a downside that most optimists miss.Optimists pay less attention to detail and fail to seek new information to challenge their rosy views leading to poor decisions. That explains why many hiring decisions go wrong. Recruiters favor candidates who look more excited and enthusiastic both indicators of optimistic employees.The Optimism Bias is one of the two key factors why we inaccurately calculate big projects we tend to underestimate both time and cost. Some Governments, like the British, are now adding an extra percentage by default to offset overly positive estimations.According to Tali Sharot, a London professor of cognitive neuroscience, 80% of us suffer from the Optimism Bias we overestimate the likelihood of experiencing good events and underestimate the likelihood of experiencing negative events.How do you choose your credit card? When it comes to driving style, smarts, honesty, and modesty to name a few most of us believe we fare better than the rest. And consider ourselves above average. However, that’s statically impossible we cannot all be better than everyone else.That’s why most warning signs fail to change behavior. People agree that smoking kills, but they believe it will harm others, not them. Seeing the glass half-full creates an unrealistic view. yourself.Are you in the right career path?  I went to college for graphic design, but by graduation I realized it wasn’t professionally going to be for me.  F ortunately, I had a computer science degree and a minor in communications which was helpful in me securing my first job in email marketing.A CS degree is not exactly related to email marketing, but the company like my education background and that I understood technology  ?????However, I was stuck in a low-paying job for just over four years, but I realized digital marketing was the career that got me excited.  This helped me understand a lot about what I needed to do and how to get where I wanted after I was let go in 2014.This should be key for you, to ensure you find your career path you are going to love and can make a decent living from.It doesn’t have to make you a millionaire, but it should be a great job balance.Keep track of your work accomplishmentsOkay, now that we got the above a bit out of the way, here is the first tip on how to increase your salary.    You need to be proactive in keeping track of your work accomplishments.While your manager may be awesome and can se e your work ethic, they most likely are not keeping track (or can) of all the good work you do.Write down big accomplishments or milestones within your job and stay organized.When you have these ready to go, you have an arsenal of items to share during performance reviews.  Or you can send them to management as weekly updates of highlights from the past week.You’ll need to get on your company’s radar in some way that shows your value.  This way you’ll have more leverage to make more money or ask for more.Plus, if you end up looking for a new job you’ll have some nice highlights for your resume to shine.Shadow other co-workers and learnIf you are looking to move up and be promoted to make more money, a great step is to learn from others.Ask a few colleagues to show you what they are working on or how something works (when they are not super busy).  Even if you do not become an expert in something they show you, you’ll have a good understanding at how something operates and can speak to it.This not only shows initiative in your current job, but helps you learn new skills that can be applied to a raise or future salary negotiations.For me being in digital marketing, I had a few specific job duties.  But I knew if I wanted to make more money or get to the next level, I’d have to learn a lot.Example being, I did not know much about paid advertising but one of my colleagues did.  So in the mornings I’d sit with him for 15-20 mins and learn.  I now manage a six-figure plus advertising budget besides my other job duties.Teach yourself new skills outside of workBesides learning from other colleagues, you’ll also have to teach yourself additional skills outside of your job.  This can be doing things on your own, taking certifications, or paying for some online classes (tons out there and of course don’t go in major debt over this).Yes, that means you can’t binge watch your favorite Netflix or Hulu show every night!I kid, many of you also have busy he ctic family lives, so time can be challenging.  But find ways to learn, read, or take a course to improve your knowledge.For digital marketing, there are a few free online certifications that enhanced my knowledge and are from reputable names.  This added value immediately to my worth, but I also learned a lot more.  I also had a music blog back in the day, which was useful in teaching me other marketing skills.Also, look at what you need to learn for next-level job positions.  See where you’re missing some skills or experience.Again, many professions this is easier than others, so don’t yell at me in the comments.Research market value on your careerA mistake a lot of people make is not staying up on the latest market research of your job title and industry.  It’s easy to not really think about this, I ignored mine for the first five years of my career!But keeping tabs on various pay scale and career sites (like  Glassdoor) for example, can give you a good idea of current dema nd.  It can help you evaluate your career in a few cool ways: Evaluate your current salary compared to others with that title Salaries based on locations around the world What other job titles in your field are making Salary and company reviews from past or current employees While the data is not 100% full proof, it gives you a great idea of where things stand.  There are a few other sites out there besides Glassdoor too.But bringing this along in performance reviews or a new job can help you leverage a better paying salary.  By not doing my research, I was definitely leaving some money on the table.Straight up ask for a raise higher than the company average The average pay raise in 2019 is expected to be about 3.1%, the highest since 2008 (Aon).  Which is some good news!  But, not everyone gets that nor is 3% adding much to your paychecks to make a big financial difference.I also don’t want you to think that’s an ungrateful or greedy stance, but previously I only got 2-3% in my low salary, it didn’t make a great impact on my finances.But, when it is time for an annual raise or your review, straight up ask for a higher percentage!  If you have your accomplishments, salary research, and are prepared, it doesn’t hurt to just ask and show some of your intel.Many managers will work with you on compensation if you prove your value and case, which will be easier from these above tips (;Sure, it might be a bit scary or intimidating to ask, but you never know the response if you don’t ask.If you aren’t getting a raise you want (or at all), start looking elsewhereImproving your skills, researching, showing your accomplishments, and as king for what you are worth might not be enough to get a raise in your current job.To put that frankly, it  blows.  Sure, you might get that 1-3% raise, but that is not going to amount to much financially.  **See above where I state this, sorry for the repeat**If this is the case, it’s time to look elsewhere and find the job that will pay you better.However, ensure your salary asks or raises are realistic.  For example, if you know your market value is $80,000/year currently and that’s on the high end, don’t ask for $150,000.I know my generation (millennials) gets a bad wrap with the job hopping mentality.  But sometimes that is completely necessary if you aren’t being valued.Final thoughtsIncreasing your salary will be essential to boosting your financial well-being.This, of course, is if you can keep lifestyle creep in check and practice good  personal finances habits.But making more money is  a part of most SolePower, however, is also looking to partner with NGOs and mobile companies for case studies in developing regions, where portable electronics like cell phones act as lifelines. SolePower's current simulations indicate that one insole will last three years of walking. Image: SolePower One Step at a Time Originally it was just a light up shoe so that students could be seen walking to and from campus at night and cars could easily see the students. It wasnt until we showed it off at Carnegie Melon alumni event in DC that we really saw a market for it defense industry, humanitarian organizations who could use it overseas, and outdoor enthusiasts who go hiking all the time, says co-founder and CEO Stanton. SolePowers mechanism and design is simple. It takes the linear movement of the step (the impression that occurs when the foot impacts the ground), converts it into a rotational energy, which then spins a generator, explains Stanton. The insole captures this energy and stores it in an external battery that can be accessed via micro or mini USB ports. Whats unique about our technology is that we have created a system that allows the generator to only spin it one direction to make it a more efficient and robust, he adds. According to co-founder and CTO Alexander, SolePowers competitive advantage over similar devices that are trying to harness the power of walking is that instead of being embedded into a shoe, its a removable shoe insole. Being an insole and not a shoe it gives us much more versatility in the sense that we can put it in a sandal for use in developing nations or sell it to the boot company and put in boots for soldiers, she says. SolePower is waterproof and weather-resistant and its current simulations and calculations indicate one insole will last three years of walking, which means an average daily person walking 2.5-5 miles a day. The company is working toward a product that will charge an iPhone or a similar smartphone in 2.5 miles. We are pricing it around the same as other solar tech products - around $130 per device - then we will go to outdoor retailers to start selling to consumers, says Stanton. Shrinking things down to a size that would make it usable was the biggest technical challenge while designing the insole, according to Stanton. We are pretty much past that one. Now getting it to market and making it mass manufacturable are the two big hurdles on the horizon, he says. Both Stanton and Alexander acknowledge the guidance they received from their mentors at the startup incubator AlphaLab. We are both engineers so we didnt know how to run the financials or put a business plan together. The mentors opened our eyes to what was coming our way, says Stanton. Especially when you are hitting your head against the wall going the wrong route, you need a mentor to steer in the correct path, Alexander reiterates. Another lesson that she learned along the startup road is talking to customers early on in development than later. They told us we should make it [the insole] more aesthetically pleasing and that helped as until then we werent thinking in that direction. Currently working out of TechShop in Pittsburgh, PA, the SolePower team is plugging away to improve the design of the insole. We design, produce, and manufacture ourselves. That allows us to rapidly iterate and do it very cheaply. It also makes us understand the manufacturing aspect of it, says Alexander, adding that the product has to be comfortable so we are solving every technical challenge.
