Small Business Recruitment Strategies that Fill Talent Gaps
Small Business Recruitment Strategies that Fill Talent GapsSmall Business Recruitment Strategies that Fill Talent GapsSmall Business Recruitment Strategies that Fill Talent GapsIn an era when a single job posting pulls in a ream of resumes to review, its hard to believe that none of those applicants is an ideal match. But when small-business owners recruit for a position that requires skills in high demand, they often find that economic volatility hasnt made hiring any easier. To mount a successful candidate search, small businesses must deploy a broader array of recruitment strategies than ever before.Small Business Recruitment SolutionsThis years recruitment processis exacerbated by the fact that while many corporate giants are reporting record profits, entrepreneurial enterprises must run leaner than ever.Small businesses face a challenge in remaining competitive in pay and perks, says Joleen Dorsey, a regional director of small-business strategy for staffing firm Manpower. As a sma ll business, its always challenging to find the right people, says Peter Marquez, senior partner for sales and marketing at eCube Systems, an enterprise software maker headquartered in Montgomery, Texas.Right now we are in the process of hiring a technical software engineer, someone who can do head-down programming but also is comfortable consulting and solving problems on the fly, adds Marquez. Indeed, its not easy to source a candidate who wields a range of technical skills and also knows how to sit down and talk with clients. Some job requirements are intrinsically difficult to meet. Just ask Brian Moloney. Were looking for at least one full-time programmer, with experience and skill in the Django web framework, which is rare but growing significantly, says Moloney, managing director at Imaginary Landscape, a web plan and development firm in Chicago.Whats the overarching theme of small-business recruitment strategies when it comes to rare combinations of skills? The most successfu l small businesses take a one-size-fits-one approach, says Dorsey. So lets look at a few ways that small employers can adapt to reel in the in-demand talent that can help take their business to the next level.Flexible Work Arrangements Are a Strong DrawWhen top talent comes to work for a small employer, a big draw can be workplace flexibility in the time and place the work gets done. Were seeing more employers becoming more accommodating on work-life balance for professionals with in-demand skills, says Dorsey. Some of our programmers have enjoyed flexible schedules and the ability to work remotely, says Marquez. Still, for a company that emphasizes client service, its a challenge to offer flexibility to someone who wears multiple hats, as is typical at small firms.A small business may be able to draw outsize attention to its employer brand by a radical-sounding perk that, in practice, is quite manageable. We now have no preset limit on paid time off, which makes us attractive, says M oloney. Our research and experience show that employees behavior doesnt change much, under the unrestricted PTO policy.Contract Work May Lead to Permanent HiresProfessionals whose services are in great demand whether business consultants or software savants often prefer to remain independent contractors who enjoy the freedom and variety that their high hourly rates enable. They may fill a small firms talent gap temporarily, or consider a permanent position if the company turns out to be a good fit.Its almost a matter of course that we hire software engineers on contract at first, says Marquez. eCube can try out contract programmers on different projects and see where they do best, eventually offering some of them full-time work, he says. Some businesses, compelled by a skills shortage to use contract labor, make a virtue of the practice by keeping the size of their workforce flexible. I prefer onsite, full-time employees, but I have to get the work done, says Moloney. So beyond the 14 on staff, we have four programmers on contract who work with us on a regular basis, and that can go up to six or seven.Skills that Dont Match May Still Be TransferrableEspecially in their recruitment strategies for senior-level professionals, small business owners would do well to consider whether they must find exact matches for all the skill-and-experience bullets on their job postings. If we cant find a perfect match then we look for someone with skills and experience that are transferrable, says Patty Barry, a principal at Matter Communications, a public relations firm based in Newburyport, Mass. That might mean we consider people with experience in sales and marketing rather than public relations, for example.Small Firms Let Employees Roll Up Sleeves with ClientsFinally, small-business owners can proudly sell hard-to-find candidates on the professional advantages of working in a small organization. What we offer and large PR agencies lack is the opportunity to work with clien ts in depth, says Barry. We dont bill by the hour, and were committed to spending a lot of time with clients, sitting together to work and learn. Big agencies that bill at $400 per hour cant do that, because many clients cant afford it.

6 Most Valuable Job Skills
6 Most Valuable Job Skills 6 Most Valuable Job Skills Many, if not most, positions come with a highly specific skill set requirement, whether itâs mastery of programs like QuickBooks or public speaking. However, there are some valuable job skills, both hard and soft, which are nearly universally in demand. From developing the ability to work well with team members of all backgrounds to navigating the social media waters, here are six of the most valuable job skills regardless of the industry or role you work in: 1. Communication skills Perhaps the most in-demand soft skill is the ability to communicate across the board: in person, over the phone, and via reports and emails. This requires understanding how to tailor your language depending on the audience. For example, you wouldnât summarize a financial report to the IT department the same way youâd explain it to the board of directors. 2. Customer service skills These valuable job skills include the ability both to bring in new customers and to keep current clients happy. Workers with strong customer service skills know how to use positive, customer-focused language, and have developed an instinct for sensing a clientâs mood and needs. In addition to empathy and a deep knowledge of your product or service, working well with customers requires a good deal of patience. We can help you find your next job: SUBMIT YOUR RESUME 3. Social media skills Effective social media skills are twofold: professional and personal. The former involves understanding how your organizationâs social media accounts play a role in marketing and customer service, as well as how to use your own accounts to connect with professionals in your industry. The latter simply requires cleaning up your personal social media accounts or setting them to private. Remember, every photo you post or message you tweet could be seen by a client, coworker or manager. 4. Microsoft Office skills While most technical job skills will depend on your position, a proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint is a near-universal demand across industries. 5. Teamwork skills The ability to work well with others is a valuable job skill in just about every workplace. While some positions will require more independent work than others, all workers are ultimately contributing to a greater goal. A key element of developing teamwork skills is embracing team diversity, which means being able to work comfortably with others from different backgrounds with varying personalities, skills and work styles. 6. Analytical and problem-solving skills Itâs no longer enough to simply pull up data and write a report. Todayâs employers are interested in workers who can analyze that data, draw conclusions from it and use that information to come up with new business strategies. Being able to handle unexpected problems is also among the most valuable job skills, as emergencies and surprise changes arise in any type of organization. Tags

What Overqualified for a Job Really Means
What Overqualified for a Job Really Means What Overqualified for a Job Really Means It never seems to make any sense. You work your whole career learning skills and gaining experience. Then one day, an employer or hiring manager tells you in a rejection email, âYou are overqualified for this positionâ. And you wonder, âWhat does that really mean?â The more you think about being too good to do a job, the less it makes sense to you. You fit the job qualifications and requirements and now that is a bad thing? If this has happened to you before, we explain what the hiring manager or employer was really trying to say by labeling you âoverqualifiedâ and how to avoid it. They cannot understand why you want the job If the job does not seem to pay well, it seems like you will get bored too quickly, or the hiring manager did not like your answer to the interview question, âWhy do you want to work here?â they may call you overqualified. To them, it makes no sense that you would take a job beneath your abilities that does not challenge you. They do not want to hire a person who will be bored and unmotivated because the work is too easy. Hiring managers and employers may even feel they are helping you by rejecting you. They feel this way because, in their eyes, the job is beneath you. They feel unworthy of your talent and abilities Imagine for a moment you are a business owner running a startup. Your experience is as small as your budget and you are learning as you go. Then, you post a job listing and an experienced Google engineer applies. What do you do? It may be easy to say you will hire him or her, but the reality is this person has the experience you find intimidating, plus you have no idea how you can afford him or her. Maybe one day they will look to hire you. But until that time, you are just too good for the company because of your experience. You know this is the case if an employer bluntly says with a curious tone, âI do not understand why you want to work here.â They fear they will lose you quickly Letâs face it. A person with great skills and experience always runs the risk of not sticking around too long. The processes behind hiring, training, bringing people up to speed and all of the administrative processes in between...all cost time and money. Companies do not want to go through the process if they predict you will likely to quit within a year. If they know your skills are relevant and that there is a risk you will be gone within a year, they may use the label âoverqualifiedâ. The risk is greater than the reward to them. This label can also be applied if they see you are a job hopper, and given every company would kill to have you, they may pass on you while using this label. They fear you are a litigious risk or culture fit Sadly, this is the result of operating in a country with Equal Employment Opportunity laws (EEOC) and less-than-respectable business owners. If a company fears you run the risk of one day filing a lawsuit for any form of discrimination, or you fall into a legally protected class of job candidate, they may call you overqualified. Meanwhile, the real intent behind the label is discrimination based on age, race, gender, and disability. Settling lawsuits is expensive and not all bosses are scrupulous. Bosses make mistakes, too. If they slip up and do something that leads to a lawsuit, it always reflects poorly on a companyâs reputation. Companies may just not want to deal with all of it and use safe words to get out of hiring someone such as ânot a good culture fitâ. What to do about all this You cannot change what you are and your experience, so try some of these things to help.Update your resume to remove information that may unnecessarily lead to biased decision-making: Date you graduated Pictures Make your reasons for wanting to work at a company have âepic meaningâ. Make your experience sound geared towards you achieving your mission in life. Explain why your experience and their company will complete your mission of working for a company that you truly believe in. Above all, never allow what you know to be obstacles get in the way of your career progression. You are only limited by the fear that is holding you back!

As a leader, how to make sure everyone has a say
As a leader, how to make sure everyone has a say As a leader, how to make sure everyone has a say Leaders need to have eyes and ears in the back of their headsâ¦and the left sideâ¦and the right side too.Thatâs because, when you lead a group discussion or other team-building exercise, you must be aware of each personâs level of engagement.More to the point, itâs important you hear from everyone in the room.Since youâre the leader and in charge of the situation, itâs your responsibility to keep tabs on each person. Itâs unlikely someone else within the group will stop and say, âI donât think Phil has spoken much so far. Phil, what do you think?âNo. Itâs your job to bring Phil into the discussion. Otherwise, the moment will come and go, Phil wonât talk and everyone will disperse none the wiser. In the new book, The Expertise Economy, authors Kelly Palmer and David Blake argue employers need more than a say - they need to make participation and constant learning a âcompetitive advantage.âThey write:âOften, the learning is âevent-driven,â meaning that people are taken out of their jobs to learn new skills, or a company will use a blended approach where they learn both through more structured learning and also on the job.Airbnb is a good example of a company that has embraced a strong learning culture by providing their employees with an innovative blended learning program for managers and leaders as well as offering them a variety of informal online learning resources for all their employees.âAs you provide employees with a chance to gain new skills and experiences, stay engaged as a facilitator and make sure every voice is heard. Here are more ways to do that: Listen with your ears and your eyes As the discussion or event unfolds, keep close watch on everyone and make a mental tally of who has spoken and who remains silent. Donât be afraid to call someone out Would some people rather slink into the corner and never participate? Of course. But youâre the leader, and you want to make everyone contributes. âCelia, we havenât heard from you yet. Any thoughts on the conversation?â Even if Celia would prefer to keep quiet, you did your best to bring her into the fold and prove you value what she has to say. Donât be afraid to shut somebody up On the other end of the introvert/extrovert spectrum, you may have people who contribute too As a leader, itâs appropriate to say, âThanks for all of your thoughts, Michael. Letâs hear from a few other people who havenât shared any opinions yet.â Sometimes, people need a nudge Often, employees (and clients) only âspeak when spoken to,â as the expression goes. But if you call upon them, you might unlock something special and add a meaningful voice to the room. The only way to find out is to give a little push. Same goes for conference calls and video chats Whether everyone is in the same room or dialing in from three different continents, the rules of leadership apply. Give each person a chance to speak or at least let people know you value their opinions. As a leader, you double as a facilitator. Stay alert, observe who talks and who doesnât and do your best to let everyone have a say. This article first appeared on Dannyhrubin.com.

The bright and dark sides of optimism and pessimism
The bright and dark sides of optimism and pessimism The bright and dark sides of optimism and pessimism âThere is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.â - William ShakespeareOur perception of life is a matter of perspective. We were taught that pessimists see the glass as half-empty while optimists see it as half-full. Iâve always liked to challenge truisms? - ? metaphors like this oversimplify life. It makes us approach optimism and pessimism as opposite and fixed concepts you are forced to choose a side. Life is not static, but fluid. You can drink it down and then refill the glass. Our society worships optimists and stigmatizes pessimists people will like you or reject you depending on your view. However, this right or wrong approach is deceiving. Both optimism and pessimism have bright and dark sides what you do matters more than how you see the glass.Optimism rules the worldâWe are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.â? - Oscar WildeOptimism wasnât always the ruler. Historically, it was associated with simplistic and unrealistic people , especially in literature such as Porterâs âPollyanna.â Psychologists, like Freud, dismissed it considering it âillusory denial.âSince the 1960s, thereâs been a change in sentiment supported by growing research that correlates positivity to being successful. Positivity became king and we, inadvertently, became its servants. Many psychologists classify the population as predominantly optimistic some claiming 80% of people are optimistic, others stating that 60% of us are somewhat optimistic. This seems an optimistic appraisal to me. Some experts agree they believe that optimism itself may affect the validity of research on positivity.Research shows that optimism is correlated with increased life expectancy, better health, increased success in academia, work, and sports, and greater chances of recovery from adversity. However, many experts think most studies canât discriminate cause from effect. Does thinking positively make us healthier? Or is it that being healthier le ad us to think positively?Optimism is a broad personality trait it makes us believe that good things will be plentiful in the future, and bad ones scarce. But, those who werenât born on the right side, can they learn to be more optimistic? This simple question creates many discrepancies. Some researchers believe that yes, we can. Others think that interventions donât make us more optimistic but instead just reduce our pessimism. The half-empty frameâOptimism is not simply the absence of pessimism, and well-being is not simply the absence of helplessness.â - Christopher PetersonAlison Ledgerwood doesnât buy that most of us see the glass half-full she believes that our perception of the world tends to lean toward negative thoughts.Research by this social psychologist proposes a fixed approach to the glass dilemma. We either have a âgainâ or a âlossâ frame we see the upside or the downside in things. Even worse, our mind gets stuck in the negative more than in the posi tive.Ledgerwood and her colleague studied peopleâs reaction to a surgical procedure by testing both a bright and dark side approach. Participants who were told the surgery had a 70% success rate, reacted positively to the prospects of going through it. Conversely, those who were told the procedure had a failure rate of 30%, reacted negatively. To challenge the initial reaction, the first group was afterward presented with the 30% failure rate and the second one with the 70% success rate. Surprisingly, the ones who originally reacted positively now had a negative view and the others didnât change theirs they continue to see the procedure as negative. This exercise proved not only that positivity can be affected by negative information but, also, that our mind can get stuck in an initial pessimistic view. But, can we switch from one frame to another?Another study presented people with the same challenge: 600 lives are at stake. Only that one group was asked to focus on the lives that could be saved and others on the ones that could be lost. Though both had to do the same simple math calculation (600 -100=?), the group that had to convert losses to gains took almost twice the time to get to the result than the other. We tend to tilt toward the negative, according to Ledgerwood. We need to work harder to recover from negative views to see the glass half-full requires an extra effort. So, whoâs right? Are we mostly optimistic? Or do we lean towards negativity? Maybe both. The optimism biasâWhat day is it?â asked Pooh. âItâs today,â squeaked Piglet. âMy favorite day,â said Pooh.â ? A.A. MilneSeeing the glass-half-full has many benefits, but thereâs a downside that most optimists miss.Optimists pay less attention to detail and fail to seek new information to challenge their rosy views leading to poor decisions. That explains why many hiring decisions go wrong. Recruiters favor candidates who look more excited and enthusiastic both indicators of optimistic employees. The Optimism Bias is one of the two key factors why we inaccurately calculate big projects we tend to underestimate both time and cost. Some Governments, like the British, are now adding an extra percentage by default to offset overly positive estimations.According to Tali Sharot, a London professor of cognitive neuroscience, 80% of us suffer from the Optimism Bias we overestimate the likelihood of experiencing good events and underestimate the likelihood of experiencing negative events. How do you choose your credit card? Most people prefer a low annual fee to a high APR even though they regularly fail to clear their balances. The smaller fee is deceiving optimists act as is they would never need the credit but end paying much more in interests âWe are more optimistic than realistic, but we are oblivious to the fact.â Tali Sharot Interestingly enough, as Sharot explains in this entertaining talk, we are more optimistic about ourselves and families, but not so optimistic about others, including our own country.Positive people overestimate their abilities. When it comes to driving style, smarts, honesty, and modesty to name a few most of us believe we fare better than the rest. And consider ourselves above average. However, thatâs statically impossible we cannot all be better than everyone else.Thatâs why most warning signs fail to change behavior. People agree that smoking kills, but they believe it will harm others, not them. Seeing the glass half-full creates an unrealistic view. Protect yourself from the dark side of optimism, but remain hopeful. The bright side of pessimismâThe optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true.â ? James Branch CabellTrying too hard to have an optimistic look can make you miserable, Oliver Burkeman explains in hi s book The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Canât Stand Positive Thinking.Thereâs a difference between being pessimistic and facing the facts. Thatâs what Burkeman discovered after speaking to countless psychologists, life coaches, and other experts. He invites us to challenge the assumptions and oversimplified advice regarding positive thinking.Burkeman coined the term âthe negative path to happiness,â which requires, instead of trying to be always overly positive, to turn toward uncertainty and insecurity, even pessimism to find a different way that might be more durable and successful.Multiple research has shown that optimism has a dark side too. Not only it can lead to poor outcomes, but it makes us underestimate risks or take less action. For example, positive affirmation might work for positive people but have detrimental consequences for those with low self-esteem they result in worse moods.By making optimism king, weâve stigmatized pessimism it has become the d emonized opposite end of optimism.Pessimism is not uni-dimensional with optimism but a separate construct it doesnât always have the negative outcomes that juxtapose it with optimismâs positive ones. Also, sometimes, pessimism pays off.Defensive Pessimist is a particular type of pessimist that takes negative thinking to a whole new level. Itâs a strategy that helps people reduce their anxiety it drives focus rather than avoidance.Thatâs why some pessimism comes handy from time to time.âMost people have the will to win, few have the will to prepare to win.â Bob KnightThe defensive pessimist focuses on the worst-case scenario s/he identifies and takes care of things that optimists miss. This approach can help us better prepare for events that are out of our full control such as a job interview. Also, this approach is very effective to boost confidence. A study showed how college students experienced significantly higher levels of self-confidence by embracing a defensive pes simist approach their self-esteem rosed to similar levels of the optimists is nearly four years. In The Power of Negative Thinking, former basketball coach Bob Knight who has over 900 wins believes that victory goes to the team that makes the fewest mistakes. His approach aims to prevent mistakes it encourages players to focus on the negative, not positive. Recognizing the teamâs weaknesses and vulnerabilities becomes a call to action.Optimism and pessimism are not antagonist concepts but rather the two sides of the same coin we need both to live a more balanced life.Stop looking at the glassâBe not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.â ?- ?Henry JamesDo you see the glass-half-full or half-empty?Binary questions limit how we see life by forcing us to choose one option. To escape this trap, we must unask the question, as I wrote here. Rather than choosing one or the other, how can we integrate both?Labels get us stuckCall ing people yourself included either optimistic or pessimist gets them stuck. It forces us to adopt one view rather than switching between them as necessary.Being a pessimist isnât necessarily bad itâs what you do with that pessimism that matters. When you overplay either a positive or negative view, thatâs when you limit your possibilities.Integrate both negativity and positivityA positive approach to life is not just about seeing only the bright side but accepting the two sides both optimism and pessimism have advantages and disadvantages.Positive thinking encourages us to take needed risks and expand our horizons. But it also leads us to ignore lifeâs dangers or exaggerate our own capabilities. Negative thinking can be detrimental when it takes over and darkens how we see the world. But a little bit of worry and doubt can keep you on your toes a dose of âdefensive pessimismâ can help you neutralize the optimism bias.Life is fluid empty the glass (and fill it again)A po sitive life is more about what we do than the labels we wear.As positive psychologist Suzanne Segerstrom said, âOptimists are happy and healthy not because of who they are but because of how they act.â In philosophy, Meliorism is a concept which drives our ability to improve the world through alteration we can produce outcomes that are considered better than the original phenomenon.Meliorism doesnât mean ignoring the worldâs evils. But to accept lifeâs setbacks as challenges to overcome. This joie de vivre energizes us it boosts our desire and enthusiasm. Rather than observing if the glass is half-full or empty, we learn to enjoy it. We drink life and then find ways to refill it.Pessimists complain that the world is hard; optimists see the bright side and ignore real challenges they expect positive thinking will change things for the better. Negativity reminds of us being realistic; positivity gives us hope we need both. Our actions, not perception, help us improve the world. Idealizing things is avoidance. The same with being negative. Life is not easy focusing on your progress will keep you motivated. You must recover the joy and pleasure in doing the work.Enjoy the glass wh at you do with it matters more than how you see the glass.Gustavo Razzetti is a change instigator that helps people and organizations create positive change. How to increase your salary The best tips to make more money
How to increase your salary The best tips to make more money How to increase your salary The best tips to make more money In the personal finance world, there needs to be more talk about how to increase your salary. Cutting back expenses and budgeting is all great, but provides limitations.Making more money (while challenging at times) has no real limitations on how much you can bring in. It also can have a major impact on your finances and quality of life.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! There is no question about it, increasing my salary has helped me achieve a higher savings rate, allowed me to travel more, and be able to not worry about unexpected expenses.Below are some tips on how to increase your salary, all of which I applied in my own pursuit of making more money out of my career.Increasing your salary is not always easyBefore I jump in, increasing your salary is not going to be simple for every career. Each profession is different, which may make it easier or harder than others to increase your pay. That being said, I think majority of the tips below can still be applied and used to help you get paid more. If anything, it may ignite a spark of what you need to do more specifically to ensure your increasing your salary.Additionally, I wrote this because majority of us have 9-5 gigs and not everyone is or wants to be an entrepreneur.Iâm in an interesting spot, because I love working for startups (My full-time job), but I also love working for myself and creating my own business (i.e Invested Wallet). But the below has helped me get first to a 16% salary increase from 2014 to 2015, to a 57% increase from 2016 to 2017. Then another 14% from 2017 to 2018.Ask yourself if you are in the right career pathBefore investing any time in ways to increase your current salary, itâs important to be honest with yourself. Are you in the right career path? I went to college for graphic design, but by graduation I realized it wasnât professionally going to be for me. F ortunately, I had a computer science degree and a minor in communications which was helpful in me securing my first job in email marketing.A CS degree is not exactly related to email marketing, but the company like my education background and that I understood technology ?????However, I was stuck in a low-paying job for just over four years, but I realized digital marketing was the career that got me excited. This helped me understand a lot about what I needed to do and how to get where I wanted after I was let go in 2014.This should be key for you, to ensure you find your career path you are going to love and can make a decent living from.It doesnât have to make you a millionaire, but it should be a great job balance.Keep track of your work accomplishmentsOkay, now that we got the above a bit out of the way, here is the first tip on how to increase your salary. You need to be proactive in keeping track of your work accomplishments. While your manager may be awesome and can se e your work ethic, they most likely are not keeping track (or can) of all the good work you do.Write down big accomplishments or milestones within your job and stay organized. When you have these ready to go, you have an arsenal of items to share during performance reviews. Or you can send them to management as weekly updates of highlights from the past week.Youâll need to get on your companyâs radar in some way that shows your value. This way youâll have more leverage to make more money or ask for more.Plus, if you end up looking for a new job youâll have some nice highlights for your resume to shine.Shadow other co-workers and learnIf you are looking to move up and be promoted to make more money, a great step is to learn from others.Ask a few colleagues to show you what they are working on or how something works (when they are not super busy). Even if you do not become an expert in something they show you, youâll have a good understanding at how something operates and can speak to it.This not only shows initiative in your current job, but helps you learn new skills that can be applied to a raise or future salary negotiations. For me being in digital marketing, I had a few specific job duties. But I knew if I wanted to make more money or get to the next level, Iâd have to learn a lot.Example being, I did not know much about paid advertising but one of my colleagues did. So in the mornings Iâd sit with him for 15-20 mins and learn. I now manage a six-figure plus advertising budget besides my other job duties.Teach yourself new skills outside of workBesides learning from other colleagues, youâll also have to teach yourself additional skills outside of your job. This can be doing things on your own, taking certifications, or paying for some online classes (tons out there and of course donât go in major debt over this).Yes, that means you canât binge watch your favorite Netflix or Hulu show every night!I kid, many of you also have busy he ctic family lives, so time can be challenging. But find ways to learn, read, or take a course to improve your knowledge. For digital marketing, there are a few free online certifications that enhanced my knowledge and are from reputable names. This added value immediately to my worth, but I also learned a lot more. I also had a music blog back in the day, which was useful in teaching me other marketing skills. Also, look at what you need to learn for next-level job positions. See where youâre missing some skills or experience.Again, many professions this is easier than others, so donât yell at me in the comments.Research market value on your careerA mistake a lot of people make is not staying up on the latest market research of your job title and industry. Itâs easy to not really think about this, I ignored mine for the first five years of my career! But keeping tabs on various pay scale and career sites (like Glassdoor) for example, can give you a good idea of current dema nd. It can help you evaluate your career in a few cool ways: Evaluate your current salary compared to others with that title Salaries based on locations around the world What other job titles in your field are making Salary and company reviews from past or current employees While the data is not 100% full proof, it gives you a great idea of where things stand. There are a few other sites out there besides Glassdoor too.But bringing this along in performance reviews or a new job can help you leverage a better paying salary. By not doing my research, I was definitely leaving some money on the table.Straight up ask for a raise higher than the company average The average pay raise in 2019 is expected to be about 3.1%, the highest since 2008 (Aon). Which is some good news! But, not everyone gets that nor is 3% adding much to your paychecks to make a big financial difference.I also donât want you to think thatâs an ungrateful or greedy stance, but previously I only got 2-3% in my low salary, it didnât make a great impact on my finances. But, when it is time for an annual raise or your review, straight up ask for a higher percentage! If you have your accomplishments, salary research, and are prepared, it doesnât hurt to just ask and show some of your intel. Many managers will work with you on compensation if you prove your value and case, which will be easier from these above tips (;Sure, it might be a bit scary or intimidating to ask, but you never know the response if you donât ask.If you arenât getting a raise you want (or at all), start looking elsewhereImproving your skills, researching, showing your accomplishments, and as king for what you are worth might not be enough to get a raise in your current job.To put that frankly, it blows. Sure, you might get that 1-3% raise, but that is not going to amount to much financially. **See above where I state this, sorry for the repeat**If this is the case, itâs time to look elsewhere and find the job that will pay you better. However, ensure your salary asks or raises are realistic. For example, if you know your market value is $80,000/year currently and thatâs on the high end, donât ask for $150,000.I know my generation (millennials) gets a bad wrap with the job hopping mentality. But sometimes that is completely necessary if you arenât being valued.Final thoughtsIncreasing your salary will be essential to boosting your financial well-being.This, of course, is if you can keep lifestyle creep in check and practice good personal finances habits. But making more money is a part of most peopleâs goal in their careers and you should be paid a great salary for your hard work and knowledge. While you may apply these above tips, just be aware you may need to be patient. It took me five years to go from a pretty low salary to now getting closer to six-figures (which was my goal to hit).Stay the course, be patient, and if you need to make more money sooner, look into some side hustles. These can help you make more money while you work on your career path. This article originally appeared on Invested Wallet. Harnessing Sole Power
Harnessing Sole Power Harnessing Sole Power Harnessing Sole Power When was the last time you were scrambling to find a power switch because your smartphone, iPod, or tablet ran out of charge while hiking, camping, or at a tradeshow? Perhaps, just last summer? Now imagine a removable shoe insole that harnesses the kinetic energy of everyday walking to charge your devices whether you are out in the wilderness or on the show floor. That insole has been developed by two young Carnegie Mellon mechanical engineering graduates. What started off as a capstone mechanical engineering design project at Carnegie Mellon University, and then became a Kickstarter project, is now a Pittsburgh-based startup called SolePower (part of the incubator AlphaLab). Founded by Matthew Stanton and Hahna Alexander in September 2012, Sole Power is now refining its energy-harvesting technology and aims to get to market by the end of 2014. According to the founders, SolePowers initial target market will be hikers, backpackers, and other outdoor enthusiasts who dont have any other option but solar power to charge their mobile electronics. SolePower, however, is also looking to partner with NGOs and mobile companies for case studies in developing regions, where portable electronics like cell phones act as lifelines. SolePower's current simulations indicate that one insole will last three years of walking. Image: SolePower One Step at a Time Originally it was just a light up shoe so that students could be seen walking to and from campus at night and cars could easily see the students. It wasnt until we showed it off at Carnegie Melon alumni event in DC that we really saw a market for it defense industry, humanitarian organizations who could use it overseas, and outdoor enthusiasts who go hiking all the time, says co-founder and CEO Stanton. SolePowers mechanism and design is simple. It takes the linear movement of the step (the impression that occurs when the foot impacts the ground), converts it into a rotational energy, which then spins a generator, explains Stanton. The insole captures this energy and stores it in an external battery that can be accessed via micro or mini USB ports. Whats unique about our technology is that we have created a system that allows the generator to only spin it one direction to make it a more efficient and robust, he adds. According to co-founder and CTO Alexander, SolePowers competitive advantage over similar devices that are trying to harness the power of walking is that instead of being embedded into a shoe, its a removable shoe insole. Being an insole and not a shoe it gives us much more versatility in the sense that we can put it in a sandal for use in developing nations or sell it to the boot company and put in boots for soldiers, she says. SolePower is waterproof and weather-resistant and its current simulations and calculations indicate one insole will last three years of walking, which means an average daily person walking 2.5-5 miles a day. The company is working toward a product that will charge an iPhone or a similar smartphone in 2.5 miles. We are pricing it around the same as other solar tech products - around $130 per device - then we will go to outdoor retailers to start selling to consumers, says Stanton. Shrinking things down to a size that would make it usable was the biggest technical challenge while designing the insole, according to Stanton. We are pretty much past that one. Now getting it to market and making it mass manufacturable are the two big hurdles on the horizon, he says. The SolePower team (L to R): Elliot Kahn, Matt Stanton, Hahna Alexander, and Davit Davitian. Image: SolePower Engineer to Entrepreneur Finding a good mentor is essential for any engineer considering being an entrepreneur. Both Stanton and Alexander acknowledge the guidance they received from their mentors at the startup incubator AlphaLab. We are both engineers so we didnt know how to run the financials or put a business plan together. The mentors opened our eyes to what was coming our way, says Stanton. Especially when you are hitting your head against the wall going the wrong route, you need a mentor to steer in the correct path, Alexander reiterates. Another lesson that she learned along the startup road is talking to customers early on in development than later. They told us we should make it [the insole] more aesthetically pleasing and that helped as until then we werent thinking in that direction. Currently working out of TechShop in Pittsburgh, PA, the SolePower team is plugging away to improve the design of the insole. We design, produce, and manufacture ourselves. That allows us to rapidly iterate and do it very cheaply. It also makes us understand the manufacturing aspect of it, says Alexander, adding that the product has to be comfortable so we are solving every technical challenge. Weve talked with local podiatrists to make sure SolePower doesnt affect the way people walk. As the SolePower team continues to evaluate and refine their product, next time your cell phone runs out of battery, consider taking a power walk. Being an insole and not a shoe it gives us much more versatility in the sense that we can put it in a sandal for use in developing nations or sell it to the boot company and put in boots for soldiers.Hahna Alexander, CTO, SolePower
